Will Feng Shui Work in Your Home?

Feng Shui is an ancient art that relates to the layout and flow of your home.

With more and more homeowners turning to this art to help them decide on how to design the interior of their homes, we decided to partner with Somfy Expert Brax Window Treatments to explore it ourselves.

What Is It?

Feng Shui is an ancient theory that originated in Chinese culture, and it has to do with the fortune of the house and its residents. In Chinese, the word 'Feng' translates to wind and 'Shui' translates to water. These two elements are said to relate to good health, which is why we in the West consider Feng Shui to mean good fortune.

How Does It Work?

Brax Window Treatments' Sales Manager and Feng Shui Consultant Cal Stewart says "Feng Shui is about creating a harmonious relationship between people and their homes."

Essentially, Feng Shui is all about balance, whether that is the flow of energy, colour or materials in your home. If there is a misbalance in your romantic life, for example, it may be because your Feng Shui is blocking it.

How Do I Apply It?

Although it may appear intimidating, it doesn't have to be if you take it step by step. "We all want our homes to provide comfort and support, to be our sanctuary," says Cal. For this reason, we say that Feng Shui can work in every home.

The first step towards balance is to de-clutter your home. Recycle anything in your home that really shouldn't be there. Remove any tangled messes, loose cords or other objects that don't allow your home to be as harmonious as it could be.

The next step involves opening your home and allowing good energy to enter. Open your windows and get rid of any broken old curtains or blinds that hinder the process.

Also take this time to introduce greenery into your home, whether it comes in the form of small houseplants, cacti or miniature succulents. New life in your home leads to good Feng Shui.

The next step is more spiritual, and for some, a bit trickier. Consider which aspects of your life require improvement, and link them to their partner Feng Shui elements. This could come in the form of you choosing to improve your health through linking it to the element of wood, and thus choosing to install beautiful wooden shutters in the Eastern area of your home.

But, I'm Not Spiritual!

Introducing Feng Shui into your home doesn't have to be a spiritual experience. It can be about de-cluttering and choosing to upgrade from traditional furnishings to more modern and neat furnishings. Everyone is different and every home is different.

Cal says that "by following Feng Shui principles, I've noticed that often small and subtle changes can balance the energies in a home, and have a profound impact on the occupants' health and relationships, and even the opportunities coming into their lives."
